The watch was marketed as the 1st major change in watches in 500 years. There were 2 prototypes in the early 1950's, and they finally introduced the Hamilton 500 to the public in January 1957. When rumors began that Elgin was planning to market an electric watch, the decided he wanted to beat them to it. About this time John Van Horn was becoming a powerful force in the research and development department and he was also becoming interested in developing an electric watch. After 4 days, it was 90 minutes off.īy 1952 they had 6 prototype electrics and they were running within railroad standards. One of these clocks was displayed at Hamilton's annual sales converences. He did suceed in making a working electric clock in 1948, but it was a poor timekeeper. One of the main problems was there were no miniature batteries commercially available (although they were in the development stage). In 1946 George Luckey in the research and development department at Hamilton decided he would like to design a watch that was battery powered. Class size is strictly limited in order to ensure students the personalized instruction necessary to master the specialized skills taught. The school mission is to preserve established skills and knowledge pertaining to the art of clock and watchmaking, repairing, and restoration, while encouraging interest in horological research. The School of Horology is dedicated to the preparation of students for entry into horological business fields.
The School of Horology is licensed by the State of Pennsylvania Department of Education Division of Private Licensed Schools and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). During the past seven years the NAWCC School of Horology has graduated approximately 500 students. The School of Horology is eager to train students so that they may successfully find their niche in the industry,? commented Daniel Nied, Director of the School of Horology. With the increasing demand created by the renewed interest in timepieces has created a shortage of skilled trades people. A widespread renewed interest in timepieces has made evident the current shortage of skilled trades people. Currently in attendance are doctors, lawyers, former military personnel, as well as individuals who are seeking employment retraining. ?The School of Horology attracts individuals of various ages, cultures and backgrounds. Standard adjustment and lubricating procedures are an important aspect of the repair program curriculum.
Students are taught to make the parts needed to repair and replace worn and broken components. The School offers programs in watch and clock repair intended to instruct students to professionally maintain and service both modern and vintage clocks and watches of all types. In addition to the physical renovation, we expect to offer more specialty courses and to add instructors.? We need to expand to meet the growing demand for our programs. D., Executive Director of NAWCC, states, ?We are pleased with the interest the PA Department of Community and Economic Development has taken in our renovation project. The grant is a significant step in funding the transformation of the School?s second floor from a storage area into classrooms, a lecture hall, and a workshop.ĭr.
